I have taught students of all ages among all subjects. My personal approach is asking them questions to try to evaluate what they know. Once I have a clear understanding of what they don't understand I will take one of 2 routes. I will either fix a misconception or I will try to simplify the problem to help them come to the conclusion on their own.
